Meet the Team!

 WELCOME:

Welcome to our blog! We will be writing about something near and dear to our hearts: Battlefield Five and its amazing mission. Our names are Jill, Joe, Macy, Gracey and Avery and we are working on a campaign to raise money for Battlefield Farms. We are students in a public writing class at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

OUR MISSION:

This semester, we teamed up with the nonprofit Battlefield farms, whose mission is to help people in East Knoxville who live in food deserts. If you are like us, we had no idea what a food desert was before this campaign, you aren’t alone. A food desert is an area where there are no healthy food options, or grocery stores within a two mile radius. East Knoxville has a surprisingly large amount of these: upwards of 19! That is crazy!

One of the greatest problems with food deserts is that many people who live in them do not have the means to travel to the store. If they do, then they also cannot purchase very much because of the price, and they are not able to carry it all back. Hopefully, our group will be able to make a difference in the lives of so many people in Knoxville. We are raising money to renovate a van into a refrigerated “mobile grocery store” or as we like to call it: The Fresh Food Battle Bus! This will be a game changer for so many reasons, and help Battlefield Farms reach even more people, and provide even more goods to our community.

What Our Blog Will Be About:

We are writing this blog post to share different stories that are personal to each of us and have impacted the way we see the world, and food. Follow along for a new post each week! Each week, we will go through and tell personal stories of how our lives and communities have been impacted by the importance of food.

In week one, Gracey will share her experience volunteering and helping to donate food in her community. For week two, Jill will share her personal experience of working at her local church at the soup kitchen to help those in her town have a hot meal. Heading into week three, Avery will talk about who will write about his past volunteer work with the salvation army. Week four, you will hear from Joe who will write about his relationship with food and how he realized how important healthy food is. Finally, on week five, you will hear from Macy and her experience with school lunch.

We are so glad you are here and hope you find this blog informative and fun!
